Three Simple Tips For Mattress Care

by Judd Willis

Mattresses are very expensive purchases that should last you a long time. However, many people don't realise that mattresses require maintenance to stay in good condition and are surprised to find this out when their mattresses start breaking down after only a few years. After you have gone through all the hard work of finding a mattress that suits you and is comfortable, the last thing you want to do is go back out and find a new one. Here are a few tips you should take to ensure this doesn't happen.

Flip Your Mattresses Around

Almost all mattresses still have some element of springs and other metallic components in them. These springs keep your mattress from falling into a misshapen blob, but they can get worn out if not adjusted every once in a while. Every month you should make it a point to flip your mattress over and then rotate it around. This will make sure that the wear is evenly spread across all sides and that the area which was getting the most use has time to recover. Making it a habit to flip your mattress after you have washed your sheets is a great way to stay on top of this schedule.

Use Slats For Your Beds Base

Mattresses are one of the most absorbent pieces of furniture in your home when it comes to bad smells, and the last thing you want is for it to be permanently stinky. If your mattress stinks, then odds are you will reek when you wake up as well. To combat this, you need to give your mattress a good flow of air to both sides, not just the top. Using a slatted bedboard instead of a fully enclosed one allows air to move around your bed at all times and should help disperse any fumes that may otherwise get trapped.

Wash And Vacuum Your Mattress Protector

Using a mattress protector is a no-brainer, and doing so can save you a lot of money in the long run. However, that is only the case if you also take care of the mattress protector. Washing it regularly (at least once a month) is recommended, but every time you change your sheets you should give your mattress protector and mattress a quick vacuum. This will pick up any gross bits of skin, hair, dirt, bacteria, and anything else. This not only keeps your mattress looking and smelling good but is also far more hygienic for you and could stop you from getting sick.
